016 Janelle Soong

On today's episode we invite our first pre-registration pharmacist to the podcast, Janelle Soong. Janelle is a Kings College London pharmacy graduate and has just started her split community pharmacy (Day Lewis Pharmacy) and pharmaceutical industry (GSK) pre-registration placement. She is also the author of Let Sleeping Pharmacists Lie: Tales from Pharmacy School and the patients you never forget which can be purchased via Amazon.

Prior to university, Janelle was training to become a classical violinist at a music specialist school where it was expected that she would perform professionally as a career. During this time, she identified her love for chemistry and was curious about drug development and formulation. This was one of the main reasons why she decided to pursue a career in pharmacy. Formulation and the Analysis of Drugs was the highlight of MPHARM course as it sparked her passion for pharmaceutical industry and she fell in love with the "behind the scenes" aspect of pharmacy. She took a year out from the course to embark on a 12-month industry placement which gave her a feel of the working environment and reinforced her thoughts of pursuing a career within the pharmaceutical industry sector.

We also discuss:

- the differences between school and university learning

- time management throughout the university degree

- how she prepared for her split pre-registration pharmacist placement as well as the reasons why she applied for it
